A Different World

♫ I know my parents love me, Stand behind me come what may. I know now that I’m ready, because I finally heard them say it’s a different world form where you come from. Here’s a chance to make it, if we focus on our goals.  If you dish it we can take it, just remember you’ve been told.  It’s a different world form where you come from.  It’s a different world form where you come from.

I feel sorry for children today.  They do not know how to be children and they do not know the joys of good television; even their cartoons are explicit and violent.  What happened to the good television shows?  Television today is filled with reality TV that is not reality at all and other indecencies.  I was watching television the other night and came across the show A Different World.  I thought and still think that this was a good show in the beginning.  I mean watching the show and seeing them bond and the friendships they formed made me want to grow up and go to college.  There were 144 episodes in which I watched each one that had positive messages, comedy and drama.  I mean how many of us hated Whitley Gilbert in the first seasons?  How many of us that attended college or even work with people who had or have the same mind set as she did?

These shows showed you problems that all of us may be subject to facing and it also offered solutions.  We saw this with the Cosby Show as well.  These shows showed us that there were successful black families and that there was life outside of poverty.  These shows did not exploit us as a people instead I felt it enlightened others about us as a people.  No, for some life may not have been as cheery as those on these syndicated sitcoms but it did exist.  Although, it was hard for people to believe Blacks could live like the Cosby’s when many of us were living like the Evans.

Where are the positive black role models on television now?  We went from no blacks on television unless we were maids, butlers or thieves to really no positive television at all.  The only black sitcoms that I know of that comes on television now is House of Payne and Meet the Browns.

All I can say is I’m happy I came along when I did.  Here are a few links to enjoy flashbacks:
